Urgent Storm Damage?
If your fence poses an immediate security risk or is unstable, call us now: 07516 651616. We aim to respond within 24–48 hours across Lancashire.
Safety First — Assess the Damage
Before touching anything, ensure the damaged fence is stable. A leaning fence panel can fall suddenly. If the damage is severe or the fence is leaning significantly, keep children and pets away.
Safety checklist:
- Check for any downed power lines near the fence
- Ensure fence isn't blocking emergency access
- Keep the area clear if fence is unstable
- Photograph all damage for insurance purposes
Identify the Type of Damage
Storm damage typically falls into one of four categories, each requiring a different response:
Blown panels
Wind has lifted panels out of their slots. Posts usually still intact. Often a DIY fix or quick contractor job.
Approx: £80–200Snapped posts
Post has broken at or below ground level. Requires excavation and new post installation.
Approx: £150–300/postLeaning fence line
Multiple posts have shifted or rotted. Common in clay soil after heavy rain loosens ground.
Approx: £500–1,500Complete destruction
Multiple panels and posts destroyed. Full section replacement required.
Approx: £800–3,000+Temporary Emergency Fixes
If you need to secure your property while waiting for a contractor, here are safe temporary fixes:
Blown panels:
Lean panels against the post line and use a length of timber as a temporary prop. Do NOT stand panels up loose — they can blow again.
Broken post:
Use a fence post spike (available from DIY stores) and a temporary post alongside the broken one. Attach the panels to stabilise.
Security gap:
Temporary fencing panels (available to hire) can be used to close a gap until permanent repairs are made.
Permanent Repair — What's Involved
For permanent repairs, a professional contractor will assess the full extent of damage and recommend the right approach. In Lancashire, where clay soil and high rainfall are common, simply replacing like-for-like often isn't enough — the root cause needs addressing to prevent recurrence.
Our storm repair process:
- 1Free site assessment and quote
- 2Removal of damaged sections
- 3Post extraction (concrete breaking if required)
- 4New posts set in fresh concrete at appropriate depth
- 5New panels and gravel boards fitted
- 6Site cleared and cleaned
Is Storm Damage Covered by Home Insurance?
Many home insurance policies cover storm damage to garden fences, but coverage varies. Check your policy under "outbuildings" or "garden structures." Damage caused by a named storm or extreme weather is more likely to be covered than gradual deterioration.
If making a claim, you'll typically need: (1) photographic evidence of the damage, (2) a written contractor's report, (3) a repair quote. We can provide all documentation needed.
How to Storm-Proof Your Fence Going Forward
Lancashire is one of the windier parts of England. These steps will significantly reduce storm damage risk:
Use concrete posts instead of wooden — they can't snap at ground level
Ensure posts are concreted in to minimum 600mm depth
Install gravel boards — they lift panels off wet soil
Use close-board fencing in exposed positions
Check and treat wooden posts annually at ground level
Remove ivy and climbing plants which add wind resistance
